STC (B) Syllabus - Theory

Theory Examination

The theory examination is in the form of a verbal questionnaire carried out by the examiner. Answers should include information relating to the following topics:

SAFETY
Appertaining to the class.
Appertaining to teaching.
Appertaining to discipline (pool rules).
Appertaining to the teacher.
HYGIENE
Appertaining to the changing rooms before swimming.
Appertaining to the swimming pool.
Appertaining to medical conditions.
Appertaining to the changing rooms after swimming.
CONFIDENCE PRACTICES
Safe entries.
Confidence exercises.
Submerging exercises.
Regaining the feet.
Floating exercises.
Push and Glides.
FRONT AND BACK PADDLE
A description of the skill.
Progressive Teaching Practices.
Relevant Teaching Points.

TREADING WATER
A description of the skill.
The limb movement variations.
Progressive Teaching Practices.
Relevant Teaching Points.
FRONT CRAWL, BACK CRAWL AND BREAST STROKE
Stroke description.
Progressive Teaching Practices.
Relevant Teaching Points.
SCULLING
A description of the skill.
Standard supportive sculling.
Propulsive sculls.
Progressive Teaching Practices.
Relevant Teaching Points.

FLOATING
A description of the various floating practices including mushroom, back star (supine) and front star (prone), and pencil floats.
Progressive Teaching Practices.
Relevant Teaching Points.
SHALLOW WATER PRACTICES ASSOCIATED WITH DIVING
Safety aspects relative to diving. These should include minimum safe depths of water.
The shallow water practices.
Breath control.
Gliding practices including manoeuvring under the water by repositioning the hands and head.
Underwater orientation by opening the eyes and the ability to recover an object from the bottom of the pool.
General watermanship and mobility to include mushroom floats, handstands, somersaults, springing practices.
